WHAT IS PILATES?
Pilates is a method of exercise that is designed to exercise the whole body in a controlled and mindful way. This method of exercise was originally called Contrology and was the result of the inspired genius of Joseph Pilates.
Within all approaches to the Pilates Method there exists an underlying set of principles that both the instructor and client will be looking to incorporate throughout the Pilates workout. These principles are the tools by which we work to develop the mind-body connection required to experience Pilates at its greatest potential.
Whether you want to strengthen your core; create long, lean muscles; rehabilitate from an injury or a condition or add a low-impact workout to your exercise regime; Pilates will do all these things – when taught well. Above all, Pilates focuses on teaching you to stabilise and strengthen your core, which makes movement more efficient and this is one of the most important things you can do for your fitness.
ABOUT M PILATES
Maria Vassallo is a Diploma qualified Pilates Instructor in Mat and Studio work. She is also a Buff Bones® instructor and a Pre-Post Natal Pilates Specialist. She has been teaching Pilates in Goulburn since 2016, and has recently built and opened her own Pilates Studio – the M Pilates Studio, which is fully equipped with all the essential Pilates equipment including Reformers, Cadillac, Wunda Chairs, Ped-a-Pole, High Barrel, Spine Correctors, as well as other apparatus.
The M Pilates studio offers Private and Semi-Private Studio sessions, as well as a selection of classes including Mat, Reformer and Circuit classes. The studio caters for beginners to advanced Pilates movers. The focus at M Pilates is to offer very personalised training programs to each client –“I believe it’s the best way to achieve results”. The studio is fun, friendly, and a relaxed environment where everyone is welcome and encouraged to explore how Pilates can improve their life through movement.
After years of working in an office, sitting at a desk for 8+ hours a day as well as having 3 children, running a farm and doing intense gym workouts, my body and mind were struggling to find the right balance. I found Pilates at a time when my body was telling me that I needed to change what I was doing. Muscle imbalances and serious back issues were the result - I was looking for movement that would challenge my body, but not make it worse.
Doing Pilates requires concentration – a mind/body connection where you are focussed on mindful movement, using the breathe to assist the body to achieve more than you could ever imagine. I loved how my body and mind felt after doing Pilates – and how the benefits filtered through into my everyday life, improving my physical strength, flexibility and posture.
In 2015, I signed up to do a Diploma of Professional Pilates Instruction. After 2.5 years of study, travelling to Canberra and Sydney for training, and completing over 450 hours of hands on training, I finally completed my Diploma of Professional Pilates Instruction through Pilates ITC. Since then, I have continued to attend workshops from leading educators in Pilates, nationally and internationally. I believe there is always more to learn, especially when it comes to human movement as no two bodies are the same! Training informs my work and keeps me on point with my clients.
I love that as an exercise, Pilates is non-discriminatory and holistic, it is suitable for any age, body type and most health issues. You can rewire years and years of unhealthy patterns imprinted in the body and turn your life around, decrease pain and improve your quality of life. Chronic pain is something nobody should have to live with. I live my life because of Pilates. I have seen the benefits of practicing Pilates and its ability to alleviate pain in a way that is sustainable.
I am a passionate Pilates Instructor who loves what I do, live what I teach and openly share my knowledge of Pilates to help improve the physical lives of my clients and anyone else who will listen to me talk “Pilates” blah blah! I love Pilates. I live Pilates. Do it – you will love it!!
